SPECIAL COLLECTION
MISSIONARY APPEAL

Saturday, July 31, and Sunday, August 1

Reverend Alexis R. Fernando, M.A., (Fordham)
Mission Coordinator, Diocese of Kandy, Sri Lanka

Father Fernando will speak to us about the Diocese of Kandy located in the central hill country of Sri Lanka.  Sri Lanka is an island off the southern coast of India with an area of 25,000 square miles.  Sri Lanka is an island nation known for its tea.

The Diocese has a population of two million where only three and one-half percent are Catholics.  The majority of the Catholics in the Diocese belong to the ethnic group called the Tamil Tea Plantation workers.  This socio-economic community is of Indian origin and is politically and economically a marginalized sector of the population.  Some live in “line rooms” which is a row of rooms in one long building.  Their access to health care and education is limited.  Malnourishment is prevalent especially in children.

While ministering to their spiritual needs, the Diocese has also initiated many self-help projects to improve the quality of life of the people.  Various programs for village development, for youth, for women, for the elderly, for dying destitute, for human rights, and for communications, help keep the commitment of the Diocese in their social and economic upliftment.  The Bishop, the 45 Priests, the 225 Religious and about a 100 full time lay Catechists invites you to join hands with them in their service to this little community in Sri Lanka.  Your prayers and your generous financial assistance will help them in their missionary effort and supplement their meager and limited resources for which they will be very grateful.  God will certainly bless your generosity.

VALUES TO LIVE BY

Today’s scriptures contain some catch phrases that are still quite familiar in our world: “All is vanity,” and “Eat, drink, and be merry” are both scriptural in origin. In the same way that it is easy to pray last week’s Lord’s Prayer thoughtlessly, it is easy to let the potent passages of scripture that are built on these common sayings glide right off our slick ears.

Last week’s scriptures instructed us to listen attentively to the Lord, so that we might pray carefully. Our listening and our prayer are intimately connected.  In the same way, this week we learn that our values and our living are connected as well. It has become quite common to ask, “Do you own your possessions or do they own you?” Like the familiar maxims from today’s readings, we might be tempted to quote this saying flippantly, and think that in the quoting of it we have truly considered it, perhaps lived it. Not true, Qoheleth, Paul, and Jesus tell us today. It is not wrong to treasure or cherish things of earth or of our own humanity; it is only wrong when those things we cherish are not of God, are not of the self-giving Christ.
